The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is an Anglo-German Grand Tourer jointly developed by McLaren Automotive and Mercedes-Benz.

The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren was motivated by the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR.

On 4 April 2008, Mercedes revealed they would stop the production of the SLR.

Technical Highlights

There are plethoras of extraordinary options on the SLR, such as the Sensotronic system – a form of brake-by-wire system. Moreover, the brakes are developed with carbon-ceramic, and offer better fade resistance and stopping power than steel discs during operating under an extreme temperature ranges too.

According to the claims of Mercedes-Benz, these discs are fade resistant up to 1,200 °C (2,200 °F). The front side discs are vented internally, which are 15 inches (370 mm) in diameter.

For the braking mechanism, 8 piston calipers are utilized. Coming to the rear discs, they have 14 inches diameter with 4 piston calipers, which automatically skim the disc surfaces to maintain themselves dry, especially in wet surroundings.

For the improvement of braking performance, an automatic air brake is installed as well.

Aerodynamics

The new SLR is featured with efficient active aerodynamics. There’s a spoiler fixed on the rear integral air brake flap; depending on the angle of elevation, the spoiler increases its down force. If the vehicle is running at a speed of 95 km/h (59 mph), the spoiler mechanically elevates to 10 degrees. If the driver’s switch is utilized, the elevation can be improved to 30 degrees for more rear downforce. If the driver doesn’t apply the brakes, the spoiler cannot raise by itself.

Engine and Transmissions

The vehicle is equipped with a supercharged, 232 kg (510 lb) hand-built 5,439 cc (5.439 L; 331.9 cu in), SOHC V8, aluminum engine. All the cylinders are positioned at 90 degrees angle with 3 valves per cylinder and oiled through a dry sump system.

Looking at the physical dimensions, the compression ratio of engine is 8.8:1 and stroke and bore is 92 millimeters (3.62 in) and 97 millimeter (3.82 in), respectively. The Lysholm-type twin-screw supercharger makes rotations at 23000 revolutions per minute and develops 0.9 bar (13 psi) of boost. The condensed air is then cooled through two intercoolers.

Coming to the engine specifications, it can produce a maximum torque of 780 N-m (580 lb-ft)@3250-5000rpm and 626 PS (460 kW; 617 hp)@6500rpm of power.

Moving on to transmissions, the vehicle uses AMG SPEEDSHIFT R 5-speed automatic transmission in three manual modes. For more durability, a 5-speed transmission is used than a 7-speed gearbox, which was used in previous version and considered to be fairly complex and relatively inefficient.

The performance of this vehicle is simply unbelievable; it takes merely 3.3 seconds to sprint from 0-100 kmph.
